The lyrics speak to me more then any other song they have, hell maybe, it speaks to me more than any song I’ve heard. At the time I was about 12, so to successfully buy my first CD by myself was special… Little did I know that they were to become my favorite band of all time and this song to stay with me until even today. “Their Greatest Hits album was the first I bought. “This song is just perfect, it has a very powerful meaning, “I just kinda died for you, you just kinda stared at me, we will always have the chance, We can do this one more time” it is so perfect… The guitar is so calm and relaxing and in the chorus is full of power but is still calm… By far my favourite song, and I have heard all of their albums including Wasting Light… This song is epic” Aurora (There Is Nothing Left to Lose, 1999) Underneath this tree I imagine me and my sweetheart parking our car and making love between the wheat ears with the stars looking down on us.”ġ5. A single giant willow tree growing in one of the fields breaks the uniformity of the land. Wide and endless fields stretch for miles on it’s right and left-hand side. There is no civilisation around so the only light comes from millions of sparkling stars and a couple of old-fashioned street lights lining the road. I always picture a beautiful scenery: an actual paved road, old and dusty, above it the night sky. Listening to it makes me feel like being someplace else, someplace magical. Long Road to Ruin (Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, 2007) Easily the most underrated song in their catalog.”ġ6. The pause before “EASY FOR YOU TO SAY” sends chills down my spine every listen of this masterpiece. Yet in These Days, his emotion translates into the music more than in any other song of theirs. “Dave Grohl is one of the most genuine musicians ever, and he is so transparent in every one of the Foo’s songs.

The purple America where Barney made such a splash has long since divided into red and blue Americas. It suggests that these isolated acts of cultural rage would coalesce into the violence of Charlottesville and the Pulse nightclub shooting, and it doesn't seem like such an outrageous conclusion. In the end the show makes a surprisingly persuasive case that maybe the Barney backlash of 30 years ago was the canary in the coal mine - that it served as an early warning of what a culture steeped in irony and conditioned to react caustically to everything on a screen could become. The tone is set by old videotape of men destroying Barney puppets, something called the I Hate Barney Secret Society, and worse. "But there’s absolutely nothing broken about Barney."įrom there, the show transforms into an assessment of mostly male rage against the purple dinosaur - and, it seems, all that Barney represents: tolerance, diversity, and guileless adoration. "There’s something broken about Grover and there’s something broken about Bert," Burns says. Steve Burns, who was host of another bright little PBS show called Blue's Clues, offers a salient comparison: If you watch Sesame Street, you see characters with flaws. It turned out to be a very short trek from "a little bit of anger" to outrage being the default setting of all media. That show was rewarded with a spike in the ratings, and lessons were learned: "A little bit of anger, a little bit of pain, isn’t necessarily a bad thing for television," Dubrow says. "One day out of nowhere, we were doing a story about race, and the first fight broke out," Springer’s producer Burt Dubrow recalls. We’re reminded that the '90s were the apogee of mega-irony, of Pulp Fiction, Nirvana, Letterman - and in the midst of all of this, Jerry Springer's talk show. But just try not to laugh while watching the San Diego Chicken pummel a lookalike Barney at a major-league baseball park while 50,000 fans cheer him on.īefore we get there, I Love You, You Hate Me expertly marshals different pop-culture voices to explain how the anti-Barney sentiment bubbled up so easily. Such sentiments, of course, make you feel bad for ever thinking a single evil thought about the purple fellow. "Barney really means so much to me," she adds, her eyes welling with tears. "All the diversity, every single race represented," says Pia Hamilton, a Filipino American who was one of Barney’s on-screen friends. The songs were uplifting (if numbingly repetitive), the hugs were plentiful, and everyone was welcome. He was fired.Įven when it's noting that the guy who used to wear the Barney costume is now a tantric sex guru, the documentary does an admirable job of capturing those early days without a wink or sneer. "But it’s really not for adults." To that end, we meet the show’s original head writer, who wrote Barney as a bit of a smart aleck, patterned on Bruce Willis's character in the then-popular ABC series Moonlighting. "We want the adults to approve," she says in archival footage. They make it clear that while many successful children’s TV shows cater to kids and adults alike, Leach wasn't interested in playing that game. Though Leach herself declined to be interviewed, we do hear from lots of people who worked on the show - and it seems like they all had a joyous, rewarding time doing it. First we get the behind-the-scenes story of how a lovely Christian wife and mom named Sheryl Leach created Barney and Friends for her local PBS station in Texas. Death, it hits notes both sweet and harsh. Two hours long - and, annoyingly, broken up into two parts with commercial inserts - the film comes to us from Scout Productions, and apropos of the studio that gave us both Queer Eye and Mr. It also has the audacity to draw a through line from people’s rage at a costumed character to the fury that seems to dominate every aspect of the present day. Even if you only have dim memories of Barney, the purple dinosaur who dominated kiddie TV in the 1990s, you should watch I Love You, You Hate Me, a new documentary on Peacock that explores how the cuddly character managed to be both the star of a top-rated PBS show and Public Enemy No. How to install the NVIDIA drivers on Ubuntu 18.How to Install Adobe Acrobat Reader on Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa Linux.Set Kali root password and enable root login. How to change from default to alternative Python version on Debian Linux.Netplan static IP on Ubuntu configuration. How to enable/disable firewall on Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver Linux. How to install Tweak Tool on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa Linux.Linux IP forwarding – How to Disable/Enable.How to use bash array in a shell script.AMD Radeon Ubuntu 20.04 Driver Installation. Queries like weather, sports, calendar and movies will also offer up a visual component in the app. As TechCrunch notes:įrom there, however, you can ask Alexa questions, listen to music, access skills and control smart devices - you know, the standard Alexa fare. Within the Amazon app, however, users can access the full wealth of Alexa features, including question and answer, smart home control, music playback, and much more. Attention Aware: On an iPad with Face ID, Voice Control wakes up when you look at your iPad and goes to sleep when you look away. Overlay: Display numbers, names, or a grid over screen elements. Show Hints: See command suggestions and hints. It also significantly reduces the usefulness that a voice assistant is destined to provide. Play Sound: When Voice Control recognizes a command, an audible sound is played. The only devices with Voice Control of any form, whether pre-iOS 5 Voice Command or iOS 5+ Siri, is an iPhone 3GS or later, and the 4th Generation iPod. This was to be expected, though, as no one ever thought Apple would allow Amazon to pit its Alexa assistant directly against Siri. Dragon dictation has incorporated its own software hooks to access the the mic hardware in all iPads, including the iPad 2. Of course, the biggest issue with that strategy on iOS is that users must first navigate to the Alexa app to use voice control, rather than being able to simply say the “Alexa” trigger word. Can Alexa on my Fitbit smartwatch control. At launch, the feature was limited to Android.Īdding voice control to the Alexa app on iOS is part of Amazon’s long-term goal of making its virtual assistant available in as many different places as possible. Yes, enable the Fitbit Skill in the Alexa app to ask your activity for the day, how you slept last night and more. Today’s update for the Alexa app fulfills a promise Amazon made earlier this year, when it touted that iOS users would soon be able to access full voice control directly through the Alexa application. If both VoiceOver and Zoom are enabled, use the three-finger quadruple-tap gesture. Google Search Updated, Brings New Google Now Cards And Voice Actions - Yes, You Can Set Calendar Events. With this update, users can now use the Alexa virtual assistant directly from their iOS device to control smart home accessories, ask questions, and much more. Apple is making a big deal about voice dictation but they are only barely catching up to Google on total voice command. Since Gingerbread & before, it's been there. Text, Search, email, tasks, reminders, apps, web, maps.you name it. Amazon has rolled out a notable update for its Alexa app on iOS today. Android has had voice dictation for almost all the phones functions for years now. Object Creator: Create original objects, assign unique properties, and share them with other players online. Starting off along the edge of String LakeĪfter looping around String Lake, the trail ducked into the trees and started gaining altitude at a steady, but reasonable, pace. A late start, but that was expected (and why we reserved the closest camping area for night #1). It’s a busy area with intersecting trails and lots of day hikers, and we were pulling out our maps no more than 10 minutes after leaving the car. But we found the right trail before long and set off at about 1:30 p.m. Day One: String Lake Trailhead to Lower Paintbrush CanyonĪfter finding a parking spot in the String Lake lot, we donned our packs and hit the trail-once we found the trailhead, that is. We picked up our permits at the ranger station the day before, which meant all we had to do the next morning was drop Callie off at the boarder’s, grab a quick lunch, and head into the park! The night before our trek, we splurged on a hotel room in Jackson Hole-totally worth it, since we had been camping for the past week or so. We were (thankfully) able to reserve the backcountry passes we needed, so our route looked like this: Knowing we’d have a late start after dropping Callie off at the boarder’s, we also opted for a shorter hike on day one. We decided to tackle it counter-clockwise and give ourselves plenty of time (two nights and nearly three days). There are several ways to approach this hike. But we crossed our fingers that going in early September meant we would miss the worst of the crowds (without having to ice-ax our way across slippery mountain passes). So it’s no surprise that it’s also the most popular trail in the park for backpackers-and even ambitious day hikers. (Let’s just say you do NOT want to forget your bear spray on this one.) If you’re graced with good weather, this trail promises the best that the Tetons have to offer: dense evergreen forests, alpine lakes, towering cliffs, wildflowers, stunning vistas, and even a good chance to spot wildlife. (The red square is what’s in the close-up photo.) Green areas are where camping is allowed (but only on designated sites and with a permit).Īnd here’s where the trail is situated within the park. This is the route, as outlined on the free map that the park provides. vista offering a sweeping 360-degree view of the Tetons’ signature rocky peaks. In between, the trail reaches its pinnacle at the Paintbrush Divide: a 10,700 ft. This popular trail circles through the center of the park, cutting into the mountains through Paintbrush Canyon on one side and Cascade Canyon on the other. But we simply couldn’t visit the Tetons without a little backpacking action! After researching local kennels, we decided to board Callie for a few days so we could get out in the backcountry.Īs for which trail to hike, the choice was obvious: the 19-mile Paintbrush-Cascade Canyon loop. Of course, with our adventure pup Callie in tow, our options for national park sightseeing were mostly limited to scenic drives and the occasional paved trail-because those are (generally) the only spots where you’re allowed to take dogs. A quick Google photos search will show you why I had permanent heart-eyes daydreaming about this place. Oh, Grand Teton National Park! Of all the places we dreamed about visiting on our two-month road trip, I think I was MOST excited about the Tetons. The virtual globe environment provides a freely available and easily navigated viewer and enables quick integration of the lidar visualizations with imagery, geographic layers, and other relevant data available in KML format. These files display full-resolution images derived from lidar in the Google Earth virtual globe. Google Earth provides an excellent platform to deliver lidar-derived visualizations for research, education, and outreach purposes. OpenTopography aims to democratize access to high-resolution topographic data in a manner that serves users with varied expertise, application domains, and computing resources. Furthermore, the data can be technically challenging to work with, requiring software and computing resources not readily available to many users. However, because of the large volumes of data produced by high-resolution mapping technologies such as lidar, it is often difficult to distribute these datasets. Because of the richness of these data sets, they are often extremely valuable beyond the application that drove their acquisition and thus are of interest to a large and varied user community. Over the past decade, there has been dramatic growth in the acquisition of publicly funded high-resolution topographic and bathymetric data for scientific, environmental, engineering and planning purposes. OpenTopography was initially developed as a proof of concept cyberinfrastructure in the Earth sciences project as part of the NSF Information and Technology Research (ITR) program-funded Geoscience Network (GEON) project. The OpenTopography Facility is based at the San Diego Supercomputer Center at the University of California, San Diego and is operated in collaboration with colleagues in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University and at UNAVCO.Ĭore operational support for OpenTopography comes from the Geoinformatics and the Geomorphology and Land Use Dynamics programs in the Division of Earth Sciences at the National Science Foundation. Many UC-authored scholarly publications are freely available on this site because of the UC's open access policies. Finally, to validate its deployability and efficacy, SociTrack is used by early childhood development researchers to capture caregiver-infant interactions. SociTrack leverages an energy-efficient and scalable ranging protocol that is accurate to 14.8 cm (99th percentile) in complex indoor environments and allows our prototype to operate for 12 days on a 2000 mAh battery. The key insight that enables both deployability and fidelity in one system is to decouple node mobility and network management from range measurement, which results in a novel dual-radio architecture. Deployments require no supporting infrastructure and provide sub-second, decimeter-accurate ranging information over multiple days. We introduce SociTrack, a platform for autonomous social interaction tracking via wireless distance measurements. Historically, systems measuring interactions have been forced to choose between deployability and measurement fidelity-they operate only in instrumented spaces, under line-of-sight conditions, or provide coarse-grained proximity data. Social scientists, psychologists, and epidemiologists use empirical human interaction data to research human behaviour, social bonding, and disease spread. |
