![]() Sharpen AI has learned the difference between image information and image noise. The product names make their primary uses self-explanatory, but each goes beyond its obvious purpose. Each one functions as a standalone application, while Sharpen and DeNoise are also plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic, and the free Topaz Studio. Topaz has released Sharpen AI, DeNoise AI, Gigapixel AI, and JPEG to Raw AI. Firms including Adobe, Skylum, CyberLink, and Topaz are using AI to extend the capabilities of their products. Topaz Labs has introduced four new programs that use artificial intelligence to take some of the drudgery out of post-production.įrom improving image quality in smartphones to creating software presets that emulate prominent painters’ styles, the branch of AI called machine learning is changing the imaging world. I shot a lot of events and meetings with it because it was silent. Most photographers I know would rather spend time creating new images than painstakingly enhancing recent captures. In 2017, I was fond of using an original model Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 with a 1-inch CMOS sensor and a Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 24–200mm (equivalent) stabilized f/2.8 lens. ![]() I can take 50-odd files from an event and run them all through DeNoise in about 10 minutes. So yes, Topaz is terrific, but if your computer is below spec it may not run well, or even at all unless you can upgrade (and RAM is not the only thing). I was astounded at how FAST everything was! I’d had no clue what I’d been accepting as good performance. I looked them up, ran them down, and bought an entry-level gaming tower for $800 that is more than capable, plus upgradable. They couldn’t give a recommendation of course, but they did steer me to the minimum specs for both Adobe and Topaz. I called Topaz and they gently explained to me that my computer was overwhelmed they were surprised that I could even run Adobe. I installed the Topaz apps (I have astonishing Sharpen AI also) and pretty much everything crashed. I thought things were supposed to take as long as they did so I didn’t mind, besides I am no longer trying to make a living. I was using a Windows All-In-One with Adobe and thought it was doing fine since I didn’t know better. There is a downside (of course): your computer has to be able to handle the programs. I do my initial cull in LR, and when I have a solid set I will sometimes run all the files through DeNoise preemptively before starting the actual processing.Topaz recommends running their AI programs before starting editing. I’ll let the ISO float up to 6400, or even higher if needed so I can handhold, or at least use a monopod. Topaz DeNoise can not only efficiently suppress the noise but sharpen the output as well! Higher than that, LR can suppress the noise, but sometimes at the expense of sharpness, and I am a sharp freak. I use Adobe, mostly Lightroom, and for most pictures, LR does a great job of suppressing noise, up to around ISO 800. I have no hesitation about using it when needed because there’s no “tell ” it just looks great.įor me, everything depends. They issue updates so fast, and with every update the results are smoother. It’s $pendy, but for me totally worth every nickel. My experience with Topaz DeNoise AI is that it is amazing and getting better all the time. Do you find that Topaz Denoise is more effective than Lightroom’s noise reduction? (I generally use Lightroom for everything, but those Topaz tools get a lot of praise.) As you mentioned, post processing tools can help deal with the resulting noise. “Slow, ” Mark Ali wrote: I like to shoot in Manual mode with Auto ISO, and sometimes getting the shot means the ISO needs to drift up pretty high.
